What Is Included in an Architectural Shingle Roof Replacement?

A replacement roof involves more than the shingles you can see. Use this guide to ask what your contractor includes, what will be reused, and what could cost extra.

Understand the layers of your roof

This simplified overview explains the main components. It is not an installation plan or a promise that every item is included in your online estimate.

  1. Architectural shinglesThe visible roof covering. Confirm the exact product and color.
  2. UnderlaymentA secondary protective layer beneath the shingles.
  3. Roof deckingThe supporting surface beneath the roof covering. Damaged sections may need replacement.

Flashing directs water away from vulnerable transitions and penetrations. Attic ventilation uses intake and exhaust openings to help manage heat and moisture. See GAF’s roof component overview for manufacturer illustrations.

Work to confirm in writing

Removal and disposal

How many existing layers will be removed? Confirm hauling, disposal, and protection for landscaping and driveways.

Deck inspection and repairs

Ask how damaged wood will be documented, how replacement is priced, and who approves extra work.

Shingles and accessories

Ask for named products, including starter strips and ridge caps. A brand name alone does not identify the complete scope.

Edges and transitions

Confirm the treatment of drip edges, valleys, walls, chimneys, pipe boots, and any existing flashing that may be reused.

Ventilation

Ask the contractor to assess intake and exhaust together and describe the work proposed for your home.

Cleanup and handover

Confirm debris and nail cleanup, a final walkthrough, and the warranty documents you will receive.

What is not automatically included?

Do not assume the price includes all new decking, gutters, skylight replacement, structural repairs, or every ventilation change. Ask about exclusions and allowances before agreeing to the project. Requirements depend on the roof and the products being installed.

How this relates to your calculator result

Our calculator assumes architectural shingles and one existing layer. It uses configured material quantities and job allowances, which may not cover every component discussed here. A roof inspection and written proposal establish the final scope.
